Why Women Grow Paperback Tour
Festivals and Members’ Events
The Real Garden Festival
Cotswolds Distillery, Shipston-on-Stour
I’ll be speaking with Marchelle Farrell, who not only appears in Why Women Grow but has also got a brilliant new memoir out herself - Uprooted - at this brand new festival in the Cotswolds.
Charleston Festival of the Garden
Charleston Farmhouse, Firle, East Sussex
I dedicated a whole chapter to Charleston in Why Women Grow so it means a great deal to be talking about the book at the home of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant. I’ll be joined by two women I interviewed for the book - floral designer Hazel Gardiner and performance artist, musician and writer Cosey Fanni Tutti - to discus the power of gardening to offer us solace, celebration, creation, death and defiance.
An evening with Alice Vincent
Books on the Hill, St Albans
Busting outta town to talk about Why Women Grow in the charming Books on the Hill bookshop, with, of course, a signing afterwards.
Why Women Grow
Backstory Bookshop, Balham, London
I’ve been following newbie bookseller Tom Rowley’s adventures into bookshoppery keenly so it feels quite meta to be talking about the book at Backstory, his breathing, living, wine-and-coffee providing bookshop in Balham, which attracts an astonishing roster of authors. I’m chuffed to be among them.
Garden Museum Literary Festival
Parham House, West Sussex
I’m delighted to be returning to the Garden Museum Literary Festival to discuss the book in conversation with Hazel Gardiner. The Museum has an excellent habit of choosing incredible locations for their festivals, which change every year, and Parham is no exception.
Horniman Plant Fair
Horniman Museum Bandstand, London
I lived over the road from the Horniman, in Forest Hill, for several years and never really could get over the fact that such incredible parkland was just on my doorstep. I’ll be in the bandstand, which arguably has the best bandstand view in the whole of London, reading from Why Women Grow and outlining how and why the book came to be. I’ll be signing books afterwards!
South London Gardeners Collective: Why Women Grow by Alice Vincent
Brockwell Park Community Greenhouses, London
I’m delighted to be speaking at the launch of the South London Gardeners Collective: a monthly event for anyone interested in or working in gardening and horticulture, welcome to everyone from novice gardeners and windowsill growers to those working with soil every day. If you’ve read Rootbound, Rewilding a Life, you’ll know the role that Brockwell Park Community Greenhouses played in my life, so it means a great deal to be returning for this discursive event on why we grow.
Tickets: £5.00 - £20.00 Book here
Why Women Grow talk and book signing, Dulwich Picture Gallery
I’ll be flying solo for this one (!) so you’ll be able to hear more about how and why this book came about, what my process was in speaking to the 45 women I interviewed for the book and what I learned along the way in one of South London’s most beautiful venues. And yes, I’ll be signing afterwards. Tickets here.
Daunt Books Festival: Nell Frizzell and Alice Vincent in conversation
Holding The Baby and Why Women Grow: Motherhood, Sisterhood, Survival
I’m delighted to be opening this year’s Daunt Books Festival with none other than Nell Frizzell, whose work I’ve admired, devoured and sometimes even commissioned over the past decade. She is a hoot, as well as being very wise, and her new book combines both of these things. Ticket price includes pastries from Gail’s - what more could you ask for?
Why Women Grow: in conversation with OmVed Gardens - SOLD OUT!
OmVed Gardens have been doing fascinating stuff in Highgate Village for a few years now, and I’m excited to be joined by the team to discuss the book, our relationship with the earth and why women grow more broadly up in North London. You’ll be able to buy books with the ticket, and I’ll be around to sign them too. Tickets here.
Why Women Grow, Chelsea Physic Garden
Those who have read Rootbound will know that Chelsea Physic Garden is one of my favourites in the city (there’s a little video to show you why here) so it’s magic to be there in conversation with one of its custodians, Maya Thomas. Maya was the first woman who I spoke to about the book, when it was a very nascent, vulnerable little idea, and in many ways she has ushered it along into existence. This is going to be special. You can buy tickets here.
Why Women Grow Book Launch, Garden Museum - STREAMING TICKETS ONLY
Where it all begins! I so loved launching Rootbound at the Garden Museum, it feels only right to be back almost exactly three years later with Why Women Grow. I wanted to bring some of the book to life here, so have invited three of its interviewees - Maya Thomas, Sui Searle and Anne McIntyre - to join me for what I know will be a full-blooded and inspiring conversation about womanhood, the earth, identity and healing. There will be a signing afterwards, and you can also watch along online. Buy tickets here.
